about

Interview conducted via Zoom on August 6, 2021.

00 - As Darius recounts his growing up in Los Angeles, I use Ice Cube’s “Down for Whatever” (1993).

37 - When Darius discusses playing the clarinet, I use the cat’s clarinet theme from Prokofiev’s Peter and the Wolf (1936), performed by David Bowie, Eugene Ormandy and The Philadelphia Orchestra (1978).

29 - As Darius tells the story of his first orchestral bassoon experiences, I use the instrumental version of “Bow Down” by Ice Cube (1996) along with Darius’ 2021 recital performance of Vivaldi’s Concerto for Bassoon and Strings in A minor, RV 497: II. Andante molto (c. 1734).

00 - I represent Darius’ love of Beethoven repertoire =with Beethoven’s Piano Sonata No. 21 in C, Op. 53, "Waldstein": II. Introduzione (Adagio molto) (1804) performed by Maurizio Pollini (1975).

20 - When Darius discusses playing jazz, I use “Midnight Indigo” by Duke Ellington (1959).

12 - As Darius talks about creativity and the Pop Practicum, I use the instrumental version of “It Was a Good Day” by Ice Cube (1993).

47 - Darius had recorded his rap verse assignment as a freestyle over the instrumental to “No Church in the Wild” by Jay-Z and Kanye West (2011), so I include that track.

47 - I mix the instrumental version of “Buy U a Drank (Shawty Snappin’)” by T-Pain (2007) with Darius’ recital performance of Alireza Motevaseli’s piece ”Afagh” (2021). The traditional Persian modes used “Afagh” match well with the quasi-Middle-Eastern feel of “Buy U a Drank (Shawty Snappin’)”.
