about

Interview conducted on September 30, 2019 at New York University

0:00 - Martin begins by talking about his interest in sample-based production. I use "Bars & Twists" by J Dilla (2010), with its mysterious samples, about which the internet has no information. Martin has previously cited Dilla as his entry point into hip-hop appreciation.

0:55 - Next, Martin talks about how his students use J Cole type beats from YouTube. I searched "J Cole Type Beat" on YouTube and the first result was Yondo - “Free J Cole Type Beat - Stay Wit Me” (2019).

1:33 - When Martin mentions transcribing Art Blakey, I use Blakey's solo from the Jazz Messengers' recording of "Caravan" (1963).

2:27 - When Martin talks about Lil Nas X’s "Old Town Road" (2019), I naturally use the song itself, along with a recreated instrumental I found on YouTube (no official instrumental was ever released.)

3:24 - During Martin’s discussion of "Celebration" by Kool and the Gang (1980), I use the DJ-friendly Reflex Re-Vision edit (2018) of the song.

4:11 - When Martin talks about his love for Lizzo's song “Truth Hurts" (2019), I loop sections of the beginning and end of the song. Martin mentions an interview in which Lizzo explains how she wrote the song (Weatherby, 2019), and I include excerpts of that interview.

6:51 - Martin had posted a recording of himself improvising using a Sensory Percussion electronic drum triggering rig (2020). I accompany sections of the interview with a remix I made of his improvisation.
