about

Interview conducted September 16, 2020 in Prospect Park

0:00 - I introduce the remix with “Style Dropped/Lessons Taught” (1990) by Poor Righteous Teachers.

1:30 - For Toni’s discussion of the word “bitch”, I use “Bitch Don’t Kill My Vibe” (2012) by Kendrick Lamar.

2:27 - When Toni talks her love of Cardi B, I use an instrumental version of Cardi’s song ”Bodak Yellow” (2018).

3:56 - For Toni’s discussion of the n-word, and of “motherfucker” as a space-filler, I use “Zealots” by The Fugees (1996). Lauryn Hill’s verse includes a self-reflexive burst of profanity: “And even after all my logic and my theory, I add a ‘motherfucker’ so you ignant n****s hear me.”

5:21 - I insert a line from “A Milli” by Lil Wayne (2008): “Motherfucker, I’m ill.”

5:26 - Writing good lyrics is not easy, it is hard but essential to express inner truth via the imperfect medium of language, I use “Fumbling Over Words That Rhyme” by Edan (2005).

6:40 - For its general mood of emotional conflict, introspection and tension, I use another Kendrick Lamar song, “FEEL.” (2017). Its lyrics include the line: “Feel like, I feel like you're miseducated.”
