about

Interview conducted October 2, 2020 in Prospect Park

I use four songs of Toni’s in this remix.

0:00 - As Toni discusses the idea of using an appealing flow to get a message across, I use her song “Why Worry” (2019).

1:17 - As Toni describes being verbally ”abused” by her mentors, educators, professors and “high art” friends for her decision to pursue hip-hop, I use her song “Forgiveness" (2017).

3:52 - Toni tells the story of writing her song “TEARS” (2020), so I naturally include that song here. It was based an improvisation that she recorded during a rehearsal, and shows the blurry line between singing, rapping and spoken word in her work.

7:30 - As Toni talks about the challenge of bridging the gap between the street culture of hip-hop and the official culture of school, I use her song “Believe Slide (Dance Meditation)” (feat. Navasha Daya & Detroit Experiment) (2017).
